stylist & set dresser briar stanley

I've never written them down, but I do have a secret list of fantasy jobs I'd like to do "some day". One of them is to work as a set designer. Some of my favourites on film: Bright Young Things, Marie Antoinette, anything by Catherine Martin. Briar Stanley has been lucky (and hard-working) enough to work with the aforementioned CM (on the film Australia), and she's also a regular stylist for real living too. Sunday Collector is her new blog.

Which five words best describe you? Curious, realist, fun, loyal, organised.
What was your first job and what path have you taken since? After studying graphic design at Enmore Design Centre, I worked as a graphic designer for two years and then ‘discovered’ the set-dresser/interior stylist occupation one day when I was on the set of a television commercial. Luckily, I haven’t looked back.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? Always travel with your camera, trust your instincts and write detailed to-do lists.
What’s your proudest career achievement? To date, breaking in to the Australian film industry – it can get competitive!
What’s been your best decision? The decision to branch out and style for magazines when I’m not working on a film – as a freelancer, I like to be busy all the time.
Who inspires you? Many of my colleagues in the film industry (we work long hours!), super stylist Megan Morton and on a more personal level, my beautiful grandmother – she’s the most intelligent woman I know.
What are you passionate about? Film, lovely houses, stationery, gift wrapping, good food, my family & friends.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? My ancestors – I would have so many questions! (I could check out their houses too).
What dream do you still want to fulfil? Purchase an original 1950s bungalow near the beach and renovate, returning it to it’s former glory.
What are you reading? Way too many interior magazines and blogs. I’m obsessed!
